I’ve just received my copy of NAACE’s Computer Education journal, with my paper on the above. The paper started life in the literature review of my MBA dissertation, before being submitted as a ‘discussion paper’ for NAACE’s data in schools think-tank, and thence to the journal.

I’ve focussed on the contribution which integrated virtual learning environments (VLEs) could make to knowledge management in education. Knowledge management is an increasingly important discipline in business management, but has received relatively little attention in education. I believe that MISs have had little impact on classroom practice because they have largely ignored the knowledge and information actually used by teachers, and because, unlike in open source software, developers have generally failed to involve teachers in the development process. A long drive up to the National College of School Leadership’s ‘Learning and Conference’ centre in Nottingham after school on Wednesday last, to run a couple of workshops for their ‘Developing Leaders for Tomorrow’ programme.

St Ives was delighted to host a mini Moodle moot last Tuesday. A number of folks had expressed an interest in visiting to see a little more of how we’ve been using Moodle, and it made most sense to get everyone together on the same day, so they could hear about what each other had been doing, rather than just our own stuff. We had folks up from the West Sussex Grid for Learning, as well as people from Surrey and Alton College. Read more

Clare and I drove up to the Barbican last Saturday to catch William Christie and Les Arts Florissants‘ production, originally for Aix-en-Provence, of Handel’s Hercules.

I’ve enjoyed staged versions of oratorios in the past – Glyndebourne did a brilliant, dystopian Theodora, and I’ve seen two very different, but equally outstanding versions of Semele, at Covent Garden and the Coliseum. The ENO’s staged version of the St John Passion was one of the most moving evenings we’ve spent at the theatre, and I’d be delighted to see it revived. Read more

Last Friday’s coverage of Moodle in the Times Educational Supplement’s Online section has now hit the web archive.

There are pieces by Jack Kenny about our use at St Ives, about the lack of involvement of schools in the decision making process, and another on a similar theme. There’s also a piece by Dorothy Walker about the terminology.
Leon Cych’s TES blog last week also explored the

Learning Services Framework Agreement, and he had a piece in Web Extras about the failure to fund school based initiatives.

Year 6 are just starting to work through a statistical investigation, around the idea of comparing pieces of text. We start off with newspaper stories from three different newspapers (used to be a red-top, the Mail or Express, and a broadsheet, but now it’s just three different tabloids). Read more

Just heard that the Moodle stand at BETT has been featured in the show’s official review, see http://www.frederation.com/bettreview2006/moodle.php

“Moodle was one small stand which made a big impact with its Open Source Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The idea is to take the best aspects of classroom practice and use Moodle as a VLE to transfer that into the home environment.”

A good time at today’s Education Show at the NEC. The 10.00 am slot, and relatively low key publicity, meant that my Moodle presentation on the Becta stand didn’t attract the vast hordes that we’d had at BETT. There was some postive feedback, and some interesting conversations afterwards. The screen-recording from the whiteboard and the discussion forums seemed the bits that really captured people’s imagination. Time spent on the Becta stand after the presentation was also useful – talking through general IT in schools stuff with show visitors and demo-ing our Moodle set up to some of the Becta team. I was very happy to play my small part in seeing Moodle represented at the BETT show last January. I see Leon Cych has linked to the HUGTOB site in his new TES Blog, so thought I ought to bring anyone following the links up to date. Here’s a copy of the post over there.

Excellent coverage of Elgg in today’s Education Guardian. I was very pleased to be able to help out with the schools’ perspective on things. Here’s the full text of my email interview with Stephen O’Hear: Read more
